I decided to mount my Canon 300D Digital SLR on top of my Telescope. You can see the black dew shield in the bottom of the image. This is a 30 second exposure at around F5.3 on the camera. The telescope was tracking without guiding and the results look interesting. The Bright object in the center of the image is M8, and I have a full image of that also on the main page of my Blog.
The Milky Way
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy 100,000 light years in diameter containing 200–400 billion stars. Depending on its structure the entire galaxy has a rotational rate of 1 per 15 to 50 million years. The galaxy is also moving at a rate of 552 to 630 km per second depending on the relative frame of reference. It is estimated to be about 13.2 billion years old, nearly as old as the Universe. This is where our Solar System resides.
